Who's on First?
Volume 4 - Dan Olsen - Stripling Warriors
with John Murphy

Hello and welcome to Who's on First. This is John Murphy and I am speaking today with the owner of one of the hottest teams in MLIB, Dan Olsen. Welcome to the show.

Dan Olsen: I am glad to be here. Thanks for inviting me

John Murphy: The pleasure is all mine. At 28-9, you have the second-best record in MLIB, but still might not win your division. How will you be able to knock off Ohio?

Dan Olsen: Pray they get more injuries than my team . Really, I think that my team has to play well against weaker teams in the NL and hope Ohio plays down to a lower level against the same teams.

John Murphy: Are there any other teams that have a chance to take over?

Dan Olsen: The NL? New York, North Carolina, and Portland.

John Murphy: Interesting you said Portland, what is up with the NL West? The last team in the NL East would be 1st in the west.

Dan Olsen: Look at Portland's DL. Calgary is not playing team ball and Phoenix needs a new hitting coach. I think the teams in the Central and west have improved themselves over the off-season but with the exception of Portland, the West has done little to change personnel. Apparently owners are either afraid of change or are comfortable with how their mediocre teams are playing. Change is good. Intelligent change is better.

John Murphy: How much of an effect does a great coaching staff have? Would Pheonix be in 1st place with an excellent hitting coach.

Dan Olsen: I think so. Look at Toronto and their coaching staff. I truly believe that my team would not have the 2nd best record without my excellent coaching staff. And yes, Phoenix would have a better record; they certainly have good pitching.

John Murphy: How did you get where you are even though you have not done any trades in 3 months and didn't get any FA over $4M?

Dan Olsen: I have been in the league probably longer than anyone with the exception of Mike. Way back to the WIBL with Will Ramirez. Because of this I have had a few years to collect some talent. With free agency I just tried to collect a few players that would compliment the core that I already have. And while I am eager to trade, no one seems to answer my e-mails, so I have no choice but to stay pat.

John Murphy: How did you get the name stripling warriors?

Dan Olsen: There is a story of 2000 young teenage men called the 'Stripling Warriors' who were forced to fight for their country. Amazingly none of them died in the course of many battles. I thought that this was a neat story.

John Murphy: OK, how about a little word association to finish. Clutch?

Dan Olsen: Joe Carter

John Murphy: Retaliation?

Dan Olsen: Defending a member of your baseball 'family'

John Murphy: Cameron

Dan Olsen: Diaz? Gone, Gone, Gone, Gone!

John Murphy: Baseball in DC

Dan Olsen: Go Expos!

John Murphy: Thanks again to Dan Olsen for appearing on Who's On First and good luck for the rest of the season. This is the old left hander rounding third and heading for home. Good night everybody
