Who's on First?
with John Murphy
This
is the first interview for Who's On First. My guest is Thunder Shock owner Eddie
Golden.
John: Thanks for agreeing to talk with me.
Eddie: No prob.
John: Ok....first question...what do you
consider to be necessities to a good team?
Eddie:
Pitching pitching oh yah i think its pitching haha but seriously I think a team
needs to have a very solid pitching staff and a very good bullpen in order to
succeed. I am also someone who puts a strong emphasis on walks and power rather
than just getting hits
John: What team (other than Toronto) scares
you the most
Eddie: Hmm there are quite a few that scare
me Portland and I have always had an interesting rivalry since we were both
inducted the same year and they have a very very tough team.
Stripling has a tough team every year. NJ had an unbelievable off-season
and should be a very strong team. Carolina has all the things I like in a
team. Texas is prob the best thing besides Toronto. NY yanks have so
much pitching its impressive. I think every team is good in every area but
those are the teams that I am not looking forward to playing
John: How can someone knock off rogo?
Eddie: Is luck a good answer hear ha-ha but
I think you have to have the most impressive series your team will ever have the
only thing I can think of is having 5 aces. I played them last year in the
World Series and I'll tell you my bullpen blew 2 games that I should have at
least had a chance to win but that team is unbelievable and has an unbelievable
manager so its almost like you have to be very very lucky
John: Maybe we can cork a couple bats
Eddie:
ha-ha yah I think that would even things out ha-ha
John: ok...lets say the league started over
and the teams were chosen completely by draft....top 3 teams that you'd be most
afraid of?
Eddie: hmm interesting question I would say:
1) Toronto- easily the best GM out of all of us and is excellent in drafting,
putting together for the future and present, and lineups
2) Portland- doesn't seem to have a superstar, but has just enough to win every
season. its impressive
3) Texas/NJ/Carolina- all these teams have great activity and know what their
team has and what they need they would all be hard to beat
John: ok....what was your worst rip-off of
all-time?
Eddie:
I would have to say the most recent trade was pretty unbelievable with NJ
getting Olerud and a 2nd in 2004 for a 3rd this year and a 5th next year Olerud
is one of the best 1B in the league and a 3rd rd pick is ok and a 5th is almost
just a throw in so it basically came down to a 3rd in 2003 for olerud and 2nd
2004 what an awesome deal for NJ
John: OK, a little word association.
Springbok?
Eddie: Improving
John: Maddux?
Eddie: Unstoppable
John: Rookie Draft?
Eddie: Rebuilding
John: Rotisserie?
Eddie: Chicken
John: Huntington owners?
Eddie: Chicken
John: Thanks, Eddie. Our next interview will be in 2 weeks. This is the old left-hander rounding third and heading for home. Good night everybody.
